All of this for a Puppy?

After the towering success of Avengers Endgame, there was one blockbuster that fans of the series and even action film fans have been anticipating. And that is the new entry in the John Wick series, John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum. The film is directed by Chad Stahelski who directed the previous two in the series, and once again stars Keanu Reeves as the titular assassin, along with other fan favorites such as Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, and Laurence Fishburne. Also joining the cast is Halle Berry, and Anjelica Huston. This takes place minutes after the second entry where we left John Wick about to take on the world as a result of a 14 million dollar bounty that was placed on his head. Previously, Wick was seeking vengeance for the killing of his Beagle puppy. I’m a big action film fan, as well as a big fan of this franchise. This is one of the more superior action series from the past 10 years so I have really been anticipating this installment. And boy, this did not disappoint.

John Wick 3 is what every action film fan would want in a franchise. Practical stunts, insane and over the top action and world building. This is easily the best installment in the series and it keeps getting better and better. Let’s start with the acting. John Wick was written for Keanu Reeves and he really brings it this time around. He truly owns the character. Wick is a man on the run and is doing everything he can to get things straightened out — in glorious fashion. Halle Berry also is great in this film, delivering her best performance in a long time. Everyone is well cast and well written, each bringing a nuance to the film. The cinematography is glorious and takes a different approach to the series definitely for the better, adding a sense of dread and eeriness to the world. Please see this on a big screen.

The action in this film is some of the best we have seen this decade and I cannot say enough about it. What sets this aside from other action films is that it’s all practical, meaning that there are no special effects. It’s all intricately choreographed and each punch or gunshot or knife fight has weight to them. Much of the action is environmental, meaning Stahelski uses everyday objects as weapons ranging from books, to dogs, to glass houses, which is very effective and a lot of fun to watch. Also, the world building is astounding and expands John Wick’s universe from previous installments. Junior Justin Landsman said, “Within the first 30 minutes of John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum trumps the first two films with insane breathtaking action, as well as super engrossing world building, solidifying this series as one of the action genre’s best.” This is so far my favorite blockbuster of 2019 and my third favorite film of 2019.

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum is a phenomenal entry in the franchise. Its great acting, excellent action, intriguing mystery, worldbuilding, and fantastic cinematography makes this a film you do not want to miss. It goes from a 1 to an 11 really quickly thanks to its pacing, and its humor balances nicely with the overall dark tone. And just to think John Wick did all of this for a puppy. I cannot wait for the next installment.
