For the past decade, celebrities have either run for office or voiced their interest in
wanting to join the political conversation. Many people view this is a disturbance and feel that the celebrities should just stick to performing whether it be acting, singing, or just being famous, (i.e. The Kardashians.) But others feel they should have a voice in politics and should state their opinion given their platform of celebrity.
I feel as if celebrities are being too political because not only are they saying how they
feel which is great, since everyone has a right to self judge but their opinions, and that is all they are, sometimes it gets out of hand. In many cases these opinions are not coming from an educated point of view, For example, the Kathy Griffin post on Instagram about Donald Trump earlier this year caused and large outcry and lots of controversy. Mark Wahlberg said to Task and Purpose Magazine, “A lot of celebrities, did, do and shouldn’t [give their political opinions], you know, it just goes to show that people aren’t listening to that anyway. They might buy your CD or watch your movie but you don’t put food on their table. You don’t pay their bills. A lot of Hollywood is living in a bubble. They’re pretty out of touch with the common person, the everyday guy out there providing for their family.” Now, I know what you may be asking, would SNL count as celebrities becoming too political? Actually no. SNL has been doing political satire skits since its inception in 1975s. Now celebrities such as John Cusack, Lena Dunham and even The Rock want to run for office. Should just stick to acting and stay out of the polls?
On the other hand, some people like having celebrities opinions heard as they should
have a say in their government. Is is because those looking for celebrity opinions are not
educated enough to form their own? After all, it is their right as citizens to speak their own mind. Though their may be some arguments or controversies, such as LinManuel Miranda’s outbursts on Donald Trump, but that’s what people feed off of. The people who want celebrities to have their say in the government leads to events such as celebrities wanting to run for public office. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger was the Governor of California because of his film status and now Al Franken is a US Senator from Minnesota. But, let’s agree to disagree, shall we.
As you can see their are many different sides to choose from in this heated argument that has been taking a turn for the worst lately. But the real question is which side are you on?
